Public Works Commissioner Erin Chute is pleased to announce four public Design Review Committee meetings scheduled from May to October to allow residents, businesses, and stakeholders to help inform and shape the Washington Street Corridor Complete Street Project.
This project, listed on the Transportation Improvement Program of the state Department of Transportation, aims to revitalize Washington Street by improving transportation infrastructure, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety, and supporting local economic and neighborhood vitality.
The community is encouraged to participate in the planning process through a series of public meetings scheduled during the next few months. Each meeting will be held online remote via Zoom from 6-8 p.m. on the following dates:
- Wednesday, May 22 (registration here)
- Monday, June 24
- Wednesday, Sept. 4
- Thursday, Oct. 17
Meeting Access Details: Participants must register in advance to join the Zoom meetings. Two weeks before each meeting, registration links and access information will be available on the Town of Brookline’s official website, the project website, and the Town’s social media channels.
These sessions will allow residents to learn more about the project details, timeline, and impacts. Participants are encouraged to provide feedback and ask questions directly to the project team.
At the May 22 meeting, the consultant team will present an updated layout of the redesigned corridor from Beacon Street to Cypress Street and then continue the concept plan through to Gateway East.
This updated layout includes additional parking spaces preserved along the corridor, as compared to the layout shown at the November 8, 2023, meeting, and maintains the integrity and safety of all elements of the project including the sidewalk-level separated bike lanes, enhanced sidewalks, and fully compliant MBTA bus stops.
The Washington Street Corridor Project reflects the Town’s commitment to create a sustainable, accessible, and vibrant community. Significant improvements will include upgraded roadways, enhanced pedestrian crossings, new cycling/multimodal lanes, and improved public transit facilities. This project aims to utilize the “Complete Streets” principles to revitalize the Washington Street corridor, accommodating all users while calming traffic and enhancing multimodal access for residents and businesses alike.
The Washington Street Corridor Project is intended to improve traffic flow and safety, which will benefit residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The project supports Brookline’s green initiatives and promotes a healthier lifestyle by fostering an environment that prioritizes pedestrian and cyclist safety, tree planting, and pedestrian scale lighting.
