Greetings Brookline Community,
I am reaching out to students, parents, caregivers and staff to provide important information to our entire community.
As was shared with you early Sunday morning, the Brookline School Committee and the Brookline Educators Union (BEU) did not reach agreement on the teachers contract during its third mediation session. The School Committee invited and the BEU accepted the offer to continue negotiating with the mediator late this afternoon; a fifth mediation session was previously scheduled for the evening of Monday, May 16. However, the parties have not agreed to a tentative agreement and the BEU has notified the PSB of its intention to strike Monday May 16th.
Given this action, the district has made the difficult decision to close all schools Monday, May 16. There will simply not be the staffing capacity to operate all schools safely, nor can PSB provide the structured education required by the state for the day to legally count as a school day.
I understand that the community will have many questions; a Frequently Asked Questions page is live at www.brookline.k12.ma.us/negotiations-faq.
I also understand that this juncture in negotiations is challenging and frustrating for all, and that closing schools on Monday will be extremely difficult for students, caregivers, staff, and our community.
Please know that the mediator is continuing to facilitate discussions to settle the contracts. The School Committee and PSB leadership will be working through Monday’s mediation session, and are determined to come to an agreement.
Because mediation may run late on Monday, an official announcement on any additional school closures will occur no later than 6am Tuesday. And of course, I will notify our community with any important updates as they develop.
Sincerely,
Dr. Linus Guillory
Superintendent of Schools
